Rules clarifications
The following (clarification of) rules are specific for the European Championships. The clarification could differ of those posted on other websites/publications even from the publisher. Clarifications posted here are leading for the tournament.

General

- Sequence and time-schedule of play is:

10:00 - 10:20 Registration

10:30 - 11:30 Baron

11:45 - 13:00 Mesopotamia

13:30 - 14:45 Augsburg 1520

15:00 - 17:30 Caylus

17:45            And the European Champions 2006 are...

- Seating is assigned per game, so the starting player is not based on the way described in the rules. Player 1 of each team will be starting player for Baron, player no2 will be seated on 2nd spot at the table, etc etc. The second round (Mesopotamia), player 2 of the team will be starting player, player 3 will be seated on 2nd spot, player 4 on 3rd spot and player 1 is last player. For Augsburg 1520 each 3rd player of the team is starting player and with Caylus the last player of each team is starting player

- English rules, translation of cards and board pieces may be put on the table as reference. The may not be used as playing pieces.

- It is prohibited during gameplay to negotiate with/persuade or influence other players. Though most players just want to give good advice, most of the time this is rather subjective and will benefit their own. You should rely on other players that they judge the gaming situation right and make the best possible move for THEIR own benefit.

Baron

- EuropeMasters tournament specific rule: End of game: In the end of the game situation it could happen that 2 knights are fighting over 1 barony, but without having conflict with eachother (example: knight, empty tile, barony, empty tile, knight). In this case the strongest knight will fight the barony (note: always knight fight eachother first and in the end game knights fight with 1/2 value). If the knight wins the barony is removed, otherwise the knights are being removed. Keep in mind that prior the fight ALL tiles where there is a conflict are not taking into account to determine someones strength.

Augsburg 1520

 - EuropeMasters tournament specific rule - money: if a player takes money he has to try to minimize the taken bank notes. For example: a player is entitles 1200 Guilders he takes 2x 500 Guilders and 2x 100 Guilders. The reason is that otherwise the game runs out of 50 Guilder banknotes very fast. In case a specific type of bank note has run out, EACH player trades in the same amount.

- EuropeMasters tournament specific rule - Start of game - taking 7 cards: 4 piles of 7 cards will be made. The starting player may choose as first a pile of cards. The cards remain blind, but he may count the values on the back of the cards. Then player 2 may select 1 of the 3 remaining piles. The reason for this is to eliminate a small luck factor of the game as the values of the cards can a.o. influence the number or value of cards you want to purchase. Of course each player still has to select and "buy" any of these cards at the start of the game.

- Handcards may be kept secret (so the number of cards). Note the cards must remain on table top.

- EuropeMasters tournament specific rule: The rules state that a player may only bid the amount what he can afford. Therefore rules does not give any sanction in case someone offers more than he can afford (as he has not enough handcards or the right combination). To prevent bluffing during the tournament: a player who makes an offer and it turns out to be that he can not afford, will lose the number of handcards of the bidding (this players choice) and automatically loses that bidding round (does not either get any money). Of the other bids the highest bid is determined according to the standard rules and the next highest bid get an amount of money. If it turns out that the player has less cards in hand than he had bid, he will lose the difference in cards the next turn. Example: a player makes a winning bid of 10 cards, but has only 6 cards in hand, he has to turn in the 6 cards and next round if he buys 5 cards, he will hand in 4 of these as well. In short: no bluffing! A player who does outbid his hand for a second time, is disqualified for Augsburg (automatically a 4th place) and remaining players will continue the game without this player.

- Building Dom/Church: If you have the "Baumeister"/builder you may use the option to build either a Dom or a Church as a 3rd privilege (so you should have won a bidding round first). You may erect only one of the two as 3rd privilege, not both of them (in case you have enough money). Note: if you have won an auction and selected a privilege card containing an office (symbol banderole) right, you may opt to use this privilege to build either the church or the dom instead of taking one of the "level tiles". If you also have the "Baumeister" you can use the "Baumeister" as 3rd privilege to complete the dom (or church, depending on what you have build with the offices right). So technically it is possible to complete both churh and dom in the same turn (costing you 2 privileges to do so).

Caylus

- You can never drop below 0 victory points. This is also valid in the situation of the end-of-phase count for example the walls. No houses in the wall segment will give you a -2 penalty, but you can not drop below 0. If you got +1 Victory Point at that moment you will drop back to 0 Victory Point level.

- If you have performed a building action prior an end-of-phase count, but you had to build in the next segment as the segment which would be counted has no room left, these houses (in the other segment) are not taking part in the count. So if the segment counted does not contain any of your houses (as you had to build them in the next segment) you get the -2 VP penalty.

- If you are the only one who has placed a pawn at the castle, but decide not to build you get -2 VP penalty. You may not choose a favour as you have not placed a house (placing a house is a number equal or bigger than 1)

- EuropeMasters tournament specific rule: Also for Caylus there should be no interaction/communication (also non-verbal) between players. This accounts also regarding the movement of the provost though the rules say otherwise. Count on your fellow players that they know what they are doing.

- Possible translation error: Phase 7 end of turn: if a sector is completed during a turn, scoring will take place. Even is the Bailiff did not pass the corresponding scoring trigger.

Mesopotamia

-Optional rule 6.2 "played cards will not return in the game" will be played. The optional rule (6.1) where each player gets a card at the start of the game is not being used.

- A pawn carrying a resource or sacrifice can still support a building action. So 2 pawns, one with a stone and one with timber can build a hut or temple (if all other restrictoins are being met)

- EuropeMasters tournament specific rule - End of game - scoring:how to determine 2nd, 3rd and 4th place: 1) First off all you look at the number of offers made (so number of tokens), in case of a tie 2) the sum of the values on the sacrificed tokens will be taken into account, if a tie still exists 3) the amount of mana left over is taken into account and as last tie breaker 4) the amount of steps the sacrifices are from the Ziggurat. If after all these steps there is still a tie-breaker the victory points will be shared/divided like normal.

- A pawn who picks up an offer has to carry it until he makes the offer at Ziggurat. So if this pawn is teleported, the offer goes with him (same counts for the resources).

- Standard setup will be used. Players 1 & 4 (green & blue) start from the same tile as players 2 & 3 (yellow & red).

- Teleport card can also be used to "steal" a stone or timber from a opponent carrying it.

- Stealing of resources. Stealing can be done only if you have a majority with respect to a single other player and at least a pawn carrying nothing. And you can steal a resource for each pawn carrying nothing. Example player A has 3 pawns (all carrying nothing), player B has 2 pawns carrying a timber and a stone and player C has 4 pawns. As player A has a majority in respect to player B he can steal both timber and stone as he has 2 (in fact 3) pawns who are eligable to steal as they are carrying nothing.

- The priest card is not cumulative. It gives you a +1 mana for a temple (not doubling). So playing 2 priest cards on a single temple will give a total of 3 (1+1+1) mana, not 4 (1x2x2).

- As soon as an offer is picked up (so moves from hut to pawn) the hut does not contain an offer anymore and reproduction could take place at the tile.

- Birth: per 2 pawns and 1 hut there is a birth. So 4 pawns and 1 hut or 2 pawns and 2 huts only result into 1 birth. 4 pawns and 2 huts result in a birth of 2.

- Building: 2 pawn with 2 timber will build only 1 hut. 4 pawns with 2 (or more) timber on the same tile can build 2 huts (restrictions taken into account).

- Stones used will move back into inventory for further usage. They are not removed from the game!

- Expulsion card: resources carried are dropped on the tile. Offers will move along with the pawn (are not dropped, same as with huts).

- Erecting a holy place: the rules are a bit confusing but the tile should be empty: so no other holy places, huts or other tribes (pawns).

- Offers may be put under your pawn instead of above as the offers tend to fall down.

- Fertility: you get 2 births for only 1 single hut (so not for all huts where you are having births)

- Expulsion and Teleport card: you MOVE the playing piece, you are not flying/jumping it to a new location. This means that the route to the new location must be eligible (and also all conditions should be met, i.e. a hut should end on a plains tile with max 1 another hut)

- Land card: this card must be played prior doing the discovery. So you may not turn a tile for discovery and decide afterwards (if you do not like the tile) to play the land card.

- A pawn can only perform 1 action during within phase. For example a pawn in phase 2 who takes part in building a hut, may not be teleported to another tile and perform there also a hut building action. The building of huts can be seen as a simultaneous action (this also counts for giving birth, erecting a holy place or gaining mana). Note that this only counts within a phase. Pawns are ready for action in the next phase (for example when you erected a holy place in prior phase)
